Though Alice’s mother never appears in the books, having died of leukemia when Alice was only 4 years old, her absence plays a major role throughout the series. She lives with her father, Ben, and her older brother Lester, whose two main interests are girls, and teasing his younger sister. The Alice series follows Alice Mckinley, a young girl growing up in Silver Spring, Maryland, from the age of 12 all the way to 60. Oddly enough, I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who knew that the series even existed, let alone read the books. The Alice books, written by Newbery medal winner Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, have been around for 35 years (the first one was published in 1985). Right now, I’m in the middle of the final book. Though I’ve read all the books countless times over the past decade, I’d never actually read them in order. About a month ago, I purchased the three Alice books still missing from my collection, and decided to do something I’d never done: Read the entire 28 book series in chronological order.
